Arrowsmith
New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1925. Second Printing [First Trade Edition].
Second Printing [First Trade Edition]. 8vo; Publisher's navy blue cloth binding and orange lettering printed on cover and spine; 448 pp. Spine is quite frayed with loss at head and tail. Corners of boards are scuffed. Dust-soiled on head of text block. Previous owner's bookplate and signature on the pastedown and free endpapers.
Arrowsmith won the 1926 Pulitzer, which Lewis famously declined, generating much publicity around the novel and rendering it a book of interest for Pulitzer collectors. Four years later, he became the first American to win the Nobel for literature. His strong characters and bias against capitalism's excesses are part of the enduring quality of his novels.
